The Effects of Wave Exposure and Tidal Height on Rocky Intertidal Community Dynamics

چکیده

Rocky intertidal ecosystems are impacted by many different abiotic and biotic factors. Specifically, both wave exposure and tidal height have been shown to have strong effects on the dynamics of intertidal communities. Wave exposure and tidal height have long been shown to limit the ranges and abundance of intertidal organisms, although the relative importance of the two factors and the relationship between them has not been thoroughly examined. In this study, we set up vertical transects at two sites, one wave-exposed and one wave-protected, at the Hopkins Marine Station in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. We found that the two sites contained similar levels of species abundance and richness except among mobile invertebrate populations. There was significantly higher mobile invertebrate abundance and species richness in the protected site compared to the waveexposed site. However, we found no significant difference in mobile invertebrate species richness or abundance corresponding to variations in tidal height. As a result, we conclude that wave exposure is relatively more important than tidal height in contributing to mobile invertebrate abundance and species richness. Better understanding of community dynamics is essential to efficiently allocate resources to conservation efforts as we strive to protect our natural world.

The Antagonistic Effect of Raised Salinity on the Aerobic Performance of a Rocky Intertidal Gastropod Nassarius deshayesianus (Issel, 1866) Exposed to Raised Water Temperature

Rocky intertidal organisms are facing pronounced fluctuations in environmental conditions even at small spatial and temporal scales. This heterogeneous habitat is a proper model system to investigate effects of physical parameters and their interactions on physiological performances of marine organisms. In the intertidal zone (especially in tidal pools), the temperature and salinity usually inc...

Additive effects of physical stress and herbivores on intertidal seaweed biodiversity.

Patterns in rocky intertidal seaweed biodiversity influence the resilience and functioning of these important primary producer communities. In turn, seaweed biodiversity patterns are the result of many ecological factors. We determined the influences of thermal and desiccation stress, herbivory, and nutrients on seaweed biodiversity on a northern California rocky shoreline. In a fully crossed d...

The Distribution, Abundance, Community Structure, and Primary Productivity of Macroorganisms from Two Central California Rocky Intertidal Habitats1

A wave-exposed sea stack and a protected boulder beach at Cayucos Point, California, were compared in terms of their intertidal biota on 17-18 February 1973. The major differences between the two sites appear to be due largely to differences in the shearing forces of waves and habitat structure. The mosaic of crevices, rivulets, and angled substrates in conjunction with a broad gradual slope an...

Global patterns of macro invertebrate biomass in marine intertidal communities

We examine global patterns of benthic macroinvertebrate biomass and its distribution among functional feeding guilds in marine intertidal cOnmlunities. Variation in ash-free dry biomass was related to physical variables (mean annual air and water temperatures, sediment grain size, intertidal slope, tide range and type, wave height and exposure) by least-squares regression analysis of data for 3...

Body-size variation exhibited by an intertidal limpet: Influence of wave exposure, tidal height and migratory behavior

Body size variation of the intertidal limpet Lottiu digitalis (Rathke) and the factors responsible for maintaining it were examined at three central California intertidal sites differing in wave exposure. Limpet body size increased with increasing tidal height. This increase in size with tidal height was correlated with exposure to wave splash and migratory behavior. In areas of high and interm...
